Nationaal Vertaalcongres: "De vertaalwereld binnenstebuiten"
Noteert u maar alvast in uw agenda: vrijdag 5 november 2010, Nationaal Vertaalcongres in Utrecht (Hogeschool Domstad).
Ter ere van het 20-jarig bestaan van de Vereniging Zelfstandige Vertalers (VZV) organiseert Teamwork in samenwerking met de VZV een congres met als centrale thema: de relatie tussen de vertaler (en tolk) en de buitenwereld. Professionals uit diverse andere beroepsgroepen spreken over onderwerpen die ook ‘hot’ zijn in de vertalerswereld. Fancy working as a staff translator in Holland? Perhaps we can help...
As a highly open economy with a tradition of trading with countries all over the world, Holland has a thriving translation industry employing some 4,000 professionals working in a wide range of settings, including both freelance and in-house. The proportion of in-house translators is relatively high, with many organisations such as banks, accountants' firms, law firms, industrial companies and other international organisations having their own translation departments as a matter of course, aware as they are that they need to be able to speak their customers' languages. The public sector also employs a large number of staff translators, and many translation agencies and companies employ their own in-house translators and revisors in addition to working with an extensive network of freelance translators.
The Dutch translation industry has evolved in recent years from a cottage industry into a relatively well-paid and sophisticated sector in which software localisers have been instrumental in fostering the widespread use of advanced translation tools such as translation memory and terminology management systems.
So what?
Despite the growth of the translation industry in Holland and the fact that many in-house translation departments successfully avoided the down-sizing trend that affected many firms in the 1980s and 1990s, the number of newcomers entering the profession has fallen in recent years as colleges offering translation courses have either closed down or seen their student numbers shrink. There is now a dearth of qualified professionals on the Dutch market. This applies particularly to native speakers of English, for whom there is a tremendous demand, both actual and latent. That's where you come in.
If you are on the point of either embarking on or completing a degree course with Dutch as a major or subsidiary (or perhaps you have not even learnt any Dutch, but are training as a German-English translator and are willing to learn Dutch), you may be interested to hear that there are openings for native speakers of English who would like to work in Holland.

What are the basic job requirements?
- Native speaker of English (N.B. This is absolutely essential.)
- University-level education
- A skilled communicator in English
- Highly developed foreign-language skills, particularly a good understanding of written Dutch
- Affinity for business-related text (i.e. written material of a legal, financial and commercial nature)
- A dependable team player who is willing to consult colleagues and can handle criticism
- An inquisitive personality
- An ability to combine accuracy and a feel for quality with an efficient and pragmatic approach to work
- An ability to cope with stress

Who are we?
We are Tony Parr and Marcel Lemmens, professional translators and translation trainers living and working in Holland. Both of us have extensive experience as translators (freelance and in-house) and as teachers of translation at the National College of Translation and Interpreting in Maastricht. We are the authors of Handboek voor de Vertaler Nederlands-Engels and have been organising short courses and workshops for professional translators, interpreters and language editors since 1993. We regularly recruit on behalf of Dutch translation companies and translation departments.
